Hiya,

I hope you can help me with this.

My central heating boiler is spewing water out of the overflow. The pressure steadily increases even when the taps aren't in use and the central heating is turned off. I keep reducing the pressure periodically, but why is it doing this and how can I stop it?

Thank you for any helpful suggestions.

Kate

Have you checkd that the filling loop or on these I beleive it may be a built in filling link under the boiler base, is closed off properly, otherwise you are constantly filling system with fresh water

Thanks gas4you

eh? the what?

Nope I don't think I've checked that, but I can't be 100% certain. I'm not called Newbie for nawt. :)

There is a plastic tap thing that I put in place and then turn a black knob so that the water pressure rises. The plastic tap isn't in though so it can't be filling this way. Is that the filling loop?

If not could you give me destructions on how to check it please?

Thanks

Yes that sounds like the filling link. Can you hear any 'running' water if you listen at the boiler?

How long does the boiler take to over pressurise, minutes, hours, days etc?

No sound of running water. I reduced the pressure to 1bar an hour ago and now it is just over 2bars. But the hot water has JUST been in use, coz I did the washing up. :D dunno if that makes a difference.

Thanks Dave

 sounds expensive!

Again but in layman's terms please corgi? :?

Agree with corgi as there is no other way that water can get into the system if we are sure the filling link is off and disconnected.

How old is it? Is it under warranty? As it is a BG boiler have you got BG 3 star cover or whatever they call it these days? If so call them out as it 'should' be covered.

This is a British Gas badged boiler. I am not sure exactly which but probably Worcester but might also be Vokera or even Vaillant?

The boiler may have a built in filling loop accessed from underneath. This could have been left open.

Otherwise the plate heat exchanger is leaking. This is quite rare within the industry but more common on some Worcester boilers, I have had to change about three.

Its probably a job at about £170-£190 in total. Not the nicest to do either. The part is usually in stock if its the model I expect.

Inside the boiler it will probably have the actual makers model and details.

the 24le is just a 24cdi so it sounds like it will be the plate H/E.

while your engineer is in the boiler he might as well do the dhw diaphragm at the same time. it will probably be on its way out and it will save you money in the long run to get it done now. he is going to have 99% of the bits out anyway.

Again if under no warranty or cover I recommend calling in Worcester on their fixed price repair of £185. At least you will get an enginneer who knows what he is doing

Thanks you four.

Pants! So not really a job a technically-minded novice could do then? Do they do Hains manuals for boilers? Ive done successful car engine transplants. :)

It's about 4 years old, and we have BG cover. We had the same problem about 2 years ago, called out BG to fix another prob with it and they fixed this at the same time, but it's started again. Didn't seem too much hassle for the bloke but I wasn't hovering while it was fixed so don't really know. Whatever it was he had all the stuff he needed with him and it took about 20-40min (I think).

:/

Thanks again

Kate

I dont think anyone would replace the plate HE in such a short time and its unlikely a BG man would have the part with him on spec.

If you have BG cover then I dont understand why you are apparently considering a DIY job when the part alone will be nearly £100.

Just call BG like everyone else!

could be needed again if the boiler is open vented with poor water. i would expect the boiler to be a leaky sieve if it is sludged up though.

he may well have had the H/E in the van, engineers make up their own vanstock so if he ordered one and didnt use it he may have kept it if he felt there were enough cdi's on the patch.
