Hi all,

I've just moved into a new house and I'm struggling to understand the nuances of the central heating system.

The house is detached and I'm bound to say noticeably colder than the old one (which was terraced). No surprises there, particularly as this is Yorkshire.

Anyway, that's not the problem.

Basically the CH will only work when the HW is also on.

By way of example if you click CH advance on the controller the red light goes on and it clicks but nothing happens. Only when you click HW advance does the boiler fire up.

As a result we have lashings of hot water which seems like a bit of a waste of energy.

The system is as follows:

Controller - British Gas UP1L

Pump - Celsia Multi-Head pump (which only has one pipe running in and one out!)

Boiler - Baxi Boston 260 (Do I need Antiques Roadshow in after Christmas?)

There is also a Honeywell Motorized Valve sitting on a pipe next to the hot water tank. This seemed to be quite warm to the touch on the metal cylinder underneath the cover but I'm guessing that since it is pumping hot water that is to be expected.

I have got a multimeter but if I needed to use that I might need some clear pointers on what to do with it.

Anyway, any general hints and tips would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,

Chris

If you have a 3 port motorised valve, the boiler is turned on by a microswitch that is operated when the valve is in the central heating only position. It could be that this microswitch switch has failed. With everything switched off, get someone to put their ear (sorry, is that "tab or "lug" in Yorkshire? ) next to the valve while somone else turns on the central heating only. After a few seconds when the valve has wound fully across, the click of the microswitch operating should be heard. (There should actually be two clicks one slightly after the other, as there's another microswitch to hold the valve in the mid position)

When the hot water is calling for heat, the boiler is switched on by the thermostat strapped to the hot water cylinder. That would explain the operating symptoms you describe.

If you are competent with the multimeter, you could check the microswitch out with that. Honeywell valve covers can easily be removed.

If you have 2 x two port valves, each valve will have a microswitch to turn on the boiler when it's open.
