Why does the overflow run from the feeder tank in the loft when I switch from central heating and hot water to hot water only. It seems to run (but not always) when no hot water has been run off (during the night or longer periods of inactivity)?

Have you checked the water level in the tank and that the ball valve closes fully?

Are you sure it's the F/E cistern causing the issues & not the main storage cistern? , sounds to me like the ballvalve on the main cold water storage is letting by causing cistern to overflow when water is not drawn off for a while.........................open a hot/cold tap in bathroom & see if the water stops overflowing.
