My central heating system continues to run after the controller says it is off. I am told that this is due to a faulty "permanent live". Does anyone know how to fix this?

does the pump run and the boiler stay alight or does the pump just stay on for a while?

do you have 2 valves on the system? (s plan) if so more than likely be the heating valve.

I am assured by a good and experienced friend that it must be either the gas valve stuck or the "permanent live" . It can't be the gas valve as it does cut off periodically, so it must be the permanent live. It seems to be situated in the box at the boiler thermostat. What does it look like, and how do you fix it?

youve misunderstood me, there shoud be a valve or 2 near the cylinder with a black wire coming out of it.

You didnt answer kevplumbs instructions here and that makes it harder for us to help you.

The permanent live is probably coming from the un-named programmer that isnt switching the boiler off!

Tell us more about the system controls you have?

Dear all,
Sorry for the lack of information.
The controller is a Drayton Lifestyle L522.
I have in front of me the circuit diagram for the Boiler Control Box Terminal Strip, which has 15 terminals, some connected to the controller - or progrmmer as it is called here - some to the valves, some to the cylinder stat and some to the pump.
It is not immediately evident to an amateur like me where to start.
Any suggestions?
Yours,
Roy Marshall

There are two motorised valves. If any one of them stuck, how would that keep the system running?
I have had them stick before, when I renewed the motor, but it didn't give me the present problem
