Hi –Can anyone please advise me whether or not it is possible to overlay existing vinyl floor tiles with new ceramic/porcelain floor tiles.

The area in question is only about 3 sq m. and the existing tiles are300mm X 300mm X 4mm thick, they are about 40 years old, self coloured, non-flexible (until heated) and bedded in some form of bitumen compound.

I don’t want to take up the existing tiles and I wonder if there is some adhesive which will bond the old vinyl surface to new ceramic or porcelain tiles.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Tony

If these tiles are really sound, not loose or flaky then use a flexible
adhesive but add latex instead of water.
Most good tile shops will be able to advise.
I would use Mapei Kerraquick with Latex plus

A powdered adhesive suitable for porcelain tiles is all that's necessary if (like nick suggests) the vinyl tiles are securely fixed.

Hi nicktiler and gcol.

Thank you for the advice.

I’ve never used or heard of Mapei Kerraquick but since retiring I’m a bit out of date with modern materials.

However I’ll obtain some and see what a job I make of it.

Thanks again,

Cheers and Best Regards,

Tony
