CH controller dead or just the battery?

I have a Landis & Gyr RBW200 central heating control panel that recently has just "died". I say died: what is happening is that the LCD display is just about readable but is very, very faint. Some of the controls appear to work (adjust clock, change on/off times) but others don't (advance and boost buttons for CH or hot water).

I've taken the control panel off wall and it has a 2 cell NiCd battery in it (2/V60R). Measuring the voltage across this when in place, shows 2.45 V which I would have thought is about right for 2 NiCd cells.

So, is the control panel dead or does the battery just need replacing?

Thanks,

Graham.

By the way, I have the tried the reset button. While this is pressed, all segments of the LCD display show. When the button is released, the controller returns back to its dead state.

For how cheap a new controller is I would replace it. Yours must be getting a bit long in the tooth by now I would think
