Ive been collecting quotes for the installation of a brand new CH & 6 rad install, and am amazed at the diversity of the quotes....
Weve had 7 quotes ranging from £2800 - £4800... several between £3400 - 3800... 5 of them are from Checkatrade, which I know provides the customer with some form of reference point, but I think its a bit of a license to add around £500+ to the installation cost... 2 quotes we have had <£3000 which are not from cheackatrade, but from personal trustworthy recommendations....
While the choice of boiler for each can vary, the main contenders seems to be Worcester and Valliant... The 2 most expensive instlinstallations0 & £4800 can both provide a 5 year warranty with their install, which as these are both at least £500 more expensive than those who can only provide a 2 year warranty, suggests you are essentially paying £500 for the extra 3 year warranty... Looking around, you can get a 3 year comprehensive CH insurance policy for just under, which will cover the full installation, and some include annual service.
Needless to say, Im tempted with one of the personal recommendations, who was recommended by a friend who had work done, and has a bit of a plumbing background, so knew about the installation... He has a self run one man business, so less overheads and expenses, which is perhaps why he can do the job for less than 3k...
He would install a Glow Worm (2yr warranty), but could do a WB for £150 more... is this worth it, or am I essentially paying extra for the brand??
Is a thermostat necessary, or required for building regs (or whatever the governing body for such installs is), if all rads have TRVs?? I have been told that you need one in an area with a rad witn no TRV which essentially becomes the temperature control area for the rest of house... While I understand how this would work, surely this could be done by setting the TRVs on the rads manually.. afterall, once youve found a sutiable temp for all areas, you shouldnt have to alter it...
We were also out in touch with someone who would do a "private" job, but said he could do install, but get someone else to commission it, and he could knock of the VAT too.. which all sounds a bit dodgy if you ask me, so Im tempted to stay well clear of this....
Any comments or advice would be welcome....
