that explains a lot! I had checked online and did see that it required a pump over-run but the heating side of the system has been working (albeit poorly) and it had never over-run before. The pump had always shut off immediately when i turned the heating off.
I was expecting to see a second cable coming from the PCB directly to the pump and as there wasn't one i assumed (wrongly) that the person who wired it up before must have know better .
I will get that connected tomorrow night before I tidy up all the cabling
