Changing a syphon

Hi, can anyone please tell me how I measure a syphon as I am not sure if I need an 8", 9" or 10" to replace mine.

When I flush the loo, sometimes the lever moves and there is no resistance so I am assuming it's the syphon!

measure from the base in the cistern to where the water go's over the top

or measure the base to the top and minus 1 1/2"
