Nope, how can the "existing joint" be relevant when the pan and the whatever kind of connector was used have been removed?

It will show, for one thing, what the old flush pipe is made of and whether it is suitable for a new pan.

It's only a simple photo we are asking for

A photo would help us advise the non-plumber OP of what fittings he might need and how to go about it.
Most MI's have photos and drawings for a reason.

I've fitted high level cisterns using 40mm waste pipe and fittings before now.

When asked what is needed to connect part A with part B, I usually reply "a plumber".

red lead putty, perhaps you handled too much in your extensive plumbing career ?

And FWIW, as you well know, the majority of connections are made with simple internal connectors.

Actually, internal flush cones were a more recent idea, the vast majority of High Level pans at the time of installation would have been fitted with an External Flush Cone.
