I need to change a double socket (due to a faulty switch), but the terminals are in a slightly different position and the existing cable won't reach, it's a little short. What's the norm in a situation like this, do I simply extend them a little with a choc block?

You can extend using choc blocks but due to space constraints in the rear of the backbox with the socket inserted, crimping would be more favourable.
