Changing water supply from old to new water mains

Hi There
We have recently moved house and found that the water supply is an old supply the rear of the house whereas their is a new mains supply at the front next to the road which I can get access to?

My neighbour tells me that the new one is a much higher pressure and is probably cleaner?

I assume that I can tap into the new one at the front with some MDPE fittings and run it under the house and feed my exsisting mains feed in the house.
Is this correct? Is there a certain depth it needs to be under the garden?
