Hello all,

Surfermace's post reminded me about something that had me curious a while ago.

I got a plumber in (CORGI reg) to fit a gas supply a little while ago in the kitchen ready for the cooker.

In the chases he prepared, he covered the copper pipes with masking tape 'ready for plastering the chases'.

Is putting masking tape over the pipe a common practice? If so, anyone know why?

TIA

I very much doubt masking tape is adequate. Mortar or plaster will attack the copper so ideally needs to be sleeved. Have used MDPE pipe before or any other plastic pipe slightly bigger than your copper pipe.

Wasn't aware of this.

Having already had kitchen fitted and I've tiled and painted, not going to be in a position to easily remedy

This has been discussed at length before. Nobody could recall ever finding copper that had been holed by plaster or mortar attack. Although theoretically possible it takes a long long time for it to damage pipes in any way.... apparently!!!!
