What sort of era was cast iron boxes used? The house is 1950's.

Mine was built early 1930's and had excelently crafted wooden back boxes with tiny dove tailed joints...not sure why they took so much care for something that was lobbed into a wall.
Needless to say they have all been removed during the re-wire.
