Bought a 40mm worktop from one of the very large sheds (with orange livery) to replace an old thinner worktop ... probably about 35mm thick.

When I cut out the hole for the hob ... ok I perhaps wasn't as careful as I should've been ... whilst manhandling it, it snapped!

The old thinner w'top was still in the yard. Tried being a bit rough with that (same size hole for hob), yet it was still, despite it's age, plenty strong enough to support itself.

The 40mm w'top was about £80. I know they come in at all different prices
... yes perhaps I'm answering my own question here but ... I'd like to know if there really is a big difference in strength when it comes to cheaper worktops?

Or was it really down to my lack of care ... like 'someone' has suggested?

As someone in Tesco once said, 'every little helps'......the thinner tops are OK but do need careful supporting.
John :)

It's down to you, I'm afraid. I tend to cut-out for hobs and sinks only once the top is in place (or at least cut to size and on top of the units) to avoid snapping them like you did
