About a year ago I removed a cheap horrible gas fire that then had a single pipe/flue which went up the chimney. I have left the metal front on the fireplace and blocked the hole so we don't get too much of a draught.

Moving forward I'd like to establish the best way to block this up. I thought about having a new gas fire or even electric fire there but to be honest I'd be happier to block it entirely. I have read many topics similar to this which have suggested simply blocking the bottom is not a good idea therefore what would people suggest?

if you're not going to use the vent again clear out the fire back, brick up the opening leaving a space for a vent, plaster over install a vent then cap off the chimney with a vented terminal.

and if you ever want to use it again do the same in reverse :D
