Evening all,
my house has thrown up a multitude of issues thanks to the previous DIYer who lived here. I've had rough plastered walls, 7 ft unsupported circles cut into walls, smashed up fireplaces buried under the living room floor, literally all sorts.
I have come to sorting out the back few rooms of the house, unfortunately the rear wall is single skin with a chimney breast up the middle so I decided against removing it and opening up downstairs into the extension as I assumed it was providing structural support to the rear wall.
The top of the stack has been removed to attic level and the roof re-instated, the visible bit was all tied into the back wall ok. I have now removed some of the plaster from the side of the chimney and it appears that it isnt actually tied in, I've exposed about a 1800mm of the join between the back wall and chimney breast and there is about a 150-200mm gap.

Anyone seen anything similar, should I use brackets to tie the chimney to the rear wall just fill in the gap with mortar or remove the breast altogether - giving the oppurtunity to open downstairs into the extension as originally planned!?
