Hi,

We are the process of buying a new house and I am wondering what to do with the chimney that is in place in the front room. (see image)

At present it has an electric fire but I want to revert back to gas. There is a blanked off gas pipe next to the chimney and inside the chimney is one of those flexible flue pipes approx 18" diameter or so. It protrudes out of the top of the house and is capped off with one of those spinning flue extractor things.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I would need to do to allow me to fit a modern gas fire.

After it is knocked down would it be easy enough to build a 'more modern' looking false chimney breast with the flue still inside?

I would love to install a wood burner but I am not sure if this will be possible.

Thanks in advance.

Get an RGI in and they will be able to tell you what you can and cannot do

My house had a similar arrangement and I was thinking of re-installing a gas fire or a dual-fuel unit.

I spoke to a couple of fireplace specialists near me both of whom said they'd be happy to send someone over to inspect the fireplace/chimney and quote, free of charge.

One of them gave me a guesstimate of £1800-£2000 for a 'cassette' type fireplace that pretty much slotted into the hole, and you could knock £700-800 off that if the chimney didn't need a liner.
