Hi,

We are the process of buying a new house and I am wondering what to do with the chimney that is in place in the front room. (see image)

At present it has an electric fire but I want to revert back to gas. There is a blanked off gas pipe next to the chimney and inside the chimney is one of those flexible flue pipes approx 18" diameter or so. It protrudes out of the top of the house and is capped off with one of those spinning flue extractor things.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I would need to do to allow me to fit a modern gas fire.

After it is knocked down would it be easy enough to build a 'more modern' looking false chimney breast with the flue still inside?

I would love to install a wood burner but I am not sure if this will be possible.

Thanks in advance.

Jesus! It's like the proverbial elephant in the room isn't it!

Looks to me as if it's a free-standing brick structure. Any idea what's above it? Is it on an outside wall?

You could have a woodburner but it would involve quite a lot of work and expense. You would need a stainless double-walled flue, which could run up inside the house or dive out and run up the outside. The benefit is great atmosphere, lovely warmth and a well ventilated house.

Hi RR

It is a standalone structure which can be easily pulled down but the room behind is the kitchen.

The construction / monstrosity has a silver coloured flue tube running up it and out if the roof via the room above it (inside a cupboard!!). it exits Through the roof.

If I install a double walled flue for a woodburner are these ok to look at I.e aesthetically pleasing ish??

Sorry, been away for a while.

If you're still reading this my best advice is to make friends with a chimney sweep, he will advise you on what's possible.
