A couple of year ago we had a new gas fire fitted inside the fireplace (similar style to a log burner). Since then, whenever we get heavy rain we can hear raindrops dropping down onto the metal plate above the fire and during strong wind the sound of the wind in the fireplace almost drowns out the TV. I’m sure our chimney doesn’t have a cowl so was wondering if having would would solve the problems, and if so which type I should get.

It looks like your old gas flue liner and small cowl has been used for your log burner style gas fire ( that would make sense ) the noises are typical of that setup ( baxi type back boilers with gas fire fronts were notorious) You Must get a Gas Safe engineer to check the gas fire, it's flue and the possibility of using the terracotta terminal as shown. The uncowled chimney is probably another room .

The small aluminium terminal would normally be for gas! if your new ish fire has been installed to the clay pot then it shouldn't have been left open.
