Hi,

I would like our dining room chimney breast opening in our Victorian semi to create an inset brick fireplace, however I do not want to install a solid fuel stove in there. It would be purely decorative with maybe a feature cast iron surround and inset basket.

Would I still need to go to a Stove fitting company to have this work carried out or would a general building company be able to do this?

thanks

A general builder, really.......do try to ventilate the existing flue from the top and bottom, sweep it first!
I guess the flue outlet will be blocked up to prevent draught.
If you can add vents on an outside wall so much the better - so much neater, I think.
Has the original breast been boarded over or something?
John :)

OP,
Why not search my previous posts about doing what you propose?
If you have catalog pics of the surround & basket etc. why not post pics of them - a pic of the existing chimney breast would also help?
FWIW: adding vents from the outside is bad practice - vent with a hit & miss vent from the inside like the majority of redundant flues are vented.
