Hi all

As per the attached photos, a previous owner has removed the chimney pot

. I wanted to ask if people think I actually need one installed (I'm using the lounge fireplace and chimney sweep has passed it - not a wood burner) and also what should I pay. So far Im getting quotes of £550 + VAT which seems huge given that it is only a mornings job I imagine and ebay sell pots for about £50. Any advice - I'm based in south London.

Cheers

Billy

No they do not go up on roofs.. So why should your guy get paid less? It really isn't as simple as jumping up there.. I dont drink coffee

if its that easy You scoot up and do it without scaffold and without dropping debris on parked cars and people walking by.
worth double the quoted including scaffold

I tell you what, go buy your pot, collect and tie on some ladders, build yourself some kind of cradle that will allow you a hop-up over the ridge, get some sand and cement, drive to the job and try and park, sheet inside below the chimney, do the job without being killed or injuring anyone or breaking any tiles, clean up, take the ladders back and see how much of that morning you have left.

You crack on bud and keep your £550+ in yer hip pocket.(y)

Oh yeah, I’m sure they are going to use scaffold. Plenty of people out there that would do a mornings work for £500, stop bigging yourself up - comparing a roofer with a barrister! Do roofers do five years at university to become qualified nowdays? Why not compare yourself with a policeman trying to disarm a drug crazed nutter with a knife or a fireman rushing into a burning building. Would you do that for £500? They don’t.

By law they should use scaffold. Looks like the top of the chimney has been tarted up and will probably fall apart anyway.
maybe get fireman sam to do it?

What law would that be - you seem certain so perhaps you can point me to the law you are referring to. Do you think they use scaffolding to fit roof aerials as well then or are they exempt?

H and S say that a scaffold should be used.

You could save money by organising the scaffold yourself . maybe £300

Then you could buy you pot £50 + 15 for sand and cement and do it yourself.

Or if you feel brave do away with the scaffold, kick up tiles and walk up the roof, check your life insurance and public liability insurance first.

Maybe the OP has fled. What I'd do ( as a country boy ) is light a smoky fire and see how it draws with the existing setup. Dunno about London and smokeless zones etc. Either way get a CO detector in the room;)
