when you say hole, do you mean an old fireplace that is being boarded up? Yes, you must put a ventilator in it to prevent the chimnney getting damp, which would soak into the walls and spoil decorations. You can get a plastic grill or an airbrick.

JohnD i thought you only had to vent the bottom of a chimney if the top is completely sealed, if you leave the copex and terminal then it is vented at the top so dampness shouldnt be an issue

The chimney should be vented top and bottom to prevent damp. The top should never be completely sealed unless it is taken down to below the roof.

top of chimney needs to have an open vent!

if copex liner is connected to vent terminal then the chimney head isnt vented.

Hi,
You need ventilation to exhaust unwanted smells, water vapour and pollution, and replace them with fresh air, but you also need to control ventilation so that we can turn it on and off as you need it, and direct it where it is necessary. In this way you can prevent the waste of heat in the way that water is wasted through dripping taps. We then only lose the heat in air allowed to escape for ventilation purposes.
