Downstairs loo won't stop filling, although it's slow. Can the valve be cleaned or will it just fall apart? And if the latter, is this what I need to replace, please?

Sometimes they get silt or sand in the valve and won’t turn off.

personally I’ve always replaced with a new one rather than mess around

I don't mind changing it but have I listed the correct replacement?

You need to establish whether the flush valve is letting by first, that will cause the fill valve to keep opening.
Turn the water off, making sure the water isn't going down the overflow, if it continues to run into pan, then you need a new flush valve.
It's usually easier to change both at the same time, for the sake of a few quid.

Ah, okay. Think it is this valve though, as the water level's increased by 30mm or so.

You will need to remove all the gunk that currently covers that joint too !

Sadly not ,only all you need to fit the valve to the cistern. Nowt on the plumbing side. There are different seals ,yours is probably a half inch ,red coloured fibre ,tap connector washer.

I bought a ball cock for a cold water tank……then had to go back to screwfix to buy the fibre washer.

and that washer is critical….I discovered :)

I think that I have a problem somewhat like the one the OP had; his fill valve looks similar but not identical (mine is a Wickes WDI B3300M fitted to a Wickes Newport Cistern etc. installed in 2014.) I've attached some pics as sharp eyes may see features that I haven't recognised.
One of the pics show that when the inlet service valve is shut, the water stays in the cistern (if above the 6L mark) so presumably the flush valve is not leaking. The float has risen but the inflow has not stopped. The continuous flow into the bowl only started yesterday (good job there isn't a drought.)
The supply pipe is a flexible one - any particular problems/hints/tips about connecting this to a replacement fill valve (theFlowmasta one he suggested)?

The flexible hose that connects to the float valve tail has a rubber washer. If it is in good condition it will re seal ok. If it's not ,fit a new washer.
