This thread has probably come to the end of its natural life now, but just for info, I have something similar and only on the short flush. I fitted a new flush valve about 18 months ago--the type you can dismount to change washers without dismantling the cistern--and it thumps like Hell on the short flush. Its done no obvious harm after a year and a half so I'm reconciled to it.
