citroen dispatch engine fault

I have a Citroen dispatch 1.9 non turbo; It has developed an engine fault, the engine clatters under load and the engine fault light goes on and off. The strange thing is that it is far worst going round left hand corners!!
Any ideas?

Have you checked the oil level?
