If you run your own business, and pay voluntary class 2, and under HMRCs self-assessment extension, filed your tax return after January, you may miss out on state pension, and other, benefits.

"The problem arises because HMRC’s systems do not allow Class 2 NICs to be counted if a tax return is filed after January, the tax office said in a technical note to accountants."

The automated deadline has passed, but you can still make the contributions manually, by arrangement, even if your payment has already been rejected and refunded.

"HMRC said those who could be affected should telephone 0300 200 3500."
