What is the purpose of the close couple H on my heating system linking the cold feed and vent? And what would happen if it was not there?

Cheers, does it just fill round it in a loop, what stops the cold feed from filling that vent pipe and overflowing? Don't understand how it prevents the system from sucking air or overflowing, maybe silly questions, hard to get my head round it just , I mean will that vent pipe only fill to the height of the cold feed, how does the pump not just push it up and pump over constantly??
