COLD RADIATORS!!!

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me -I've just moved into a new house and the central heating is not working; all the radiators are cold - the hot water comes on OK and all the controls show that the boiler is working fine. The boiler is a Vaillant Eco Tech plus make and is newly fitted.

I called out the plumber who said there was a leak in the motorised valve and believed the problem to be the pump which he wanted to replace and flush the system for £200. He also said that if any water had got into the valve and caused further damage that an extra £50 would be charged.

Is this charge reasonable and does it sound like the plumber knows what he is talking about.

Any suggestions, ideas would be really appreciated.

Did he check the syncron motor in the valve, there should be one by the cylinder?

I'm not sure, he didn't mention it - he opened up a box with a lot of wires; he said it was the central control box for the boilers.

This is a combi boiler.
If the boiler works for HW then most of it must be OK.
I would look to see what controls are fitted around the house for the heating.
Likely there is a time switch in the boiler itself (which you are switching on) also there is (should be) a wall thermostat most likely in the hall or living room.
It might well be set to a low setting and so the boiler doesn't start.

I think you should eliminate the easy things first.

OTOH I might be insulting your intelligence and there is some other bigger problem.

The time switch is external and the boiler works OK according to the display on the panel and I haven't spotted a thermostat anywhere.
