I have an old large cold rectangular plastic cold water cistern in the loft. It doesn't cause any problems but I have recently been reading about "bylaw 30" and have been trying to find a kit (i.e lid insulating jacket etc). I was thinking of cutting a lid out of plyboard, would you bother doing anything else or just live with what I've got? (It doesn't cause me any problems)

wrap the plywood in polythene or it'll rot in the end. You can get some rockwoll and wrap that in insulation, then wrap that round the tank. I wrapped mine in bin bags 20 years ago. It's still ok. You might not have a problem, but you might not feel so good after a bird or a rodent has decomposed in the tank.
