Sorry if this is a dumb question!?

I'm guessing it might be use to fill up the toilets after flushing? What about the cold water that comes out of my taps - is this from the mains direct?

Thanks
SB

cold water tank is to fill up the hot water cylinder, nothing to do (normally) with any of the cold water you draw off.

Turn off your stoptap. Run your bathroom cold taps and if they still flow, you will know that they are fed from the tank. Same with your toilet cistern.
Your kitchen tap should be mains fed and will have no flow.
The tank will also feed your hot cylinder if you have one. :D

Thanks everyone - will give it a go.

Kevplumb - you should be on the telly...............

................NOT!

In addition to all of the above, it also balances the pressure of the hot a cold feeds upstairs (e.g. balances the hot and cold pressures available at your mixer taps) i.e. the hot water tank is fed from the cold water tank so has it's pressure. Have a look in your tank too and you may never drink from the upstairs cold taps again, I never do even if it looks clean.

Yes indeed bathjobby, that's one reason I asked - although the inside of my kettle ain't too lovely either. Now, where's that descaler......

Fitz has put the answer to the original question in the wrong thread!
