The original Worcester 24i and 24i junior had no div valve or plate heat exchangers.

They were ' tube in tube' heat ecxhangers

If they shared the same heat exchanger, what stopping hot water from over heating if heating is in used?

You set it up properly with a sensible flow temperature, just as all condensing boilers should be set up. Yes, if you go and set your flow temp to 80 then you're going to get some hotter water coming through initially, but you shouldn't be doing that anyway! There are ways to combat it if you are someone who insists that radiators should be hot enough to jump off the walls though
 
In the trade 40+ years & Im also a fan of Intergas. I can service an Intergas boiler with my penis, but not on a cold day.
