I live in a hard water area-Maidstone in Kent. I want to put a combi boiler in but have been told by some local people that the heat exchanger unit might need replacing after only 2 years. Are combi boilers more prone to this problem? The flow rate of the cold water is 25 litres /min.

Bl**dy hell, that's some flow rate!!

Yes combi boilers do have problems with heat exchangers and hard water, but it can be reduced by using a silicone-polyphosphate treatment unit lsuch as Combimate or Aquadial. The heat exchanger will only need descaling though. If yours is a family dwelling, you should think about something other than a combi.

Combies are wonderful, they keep me in work :D
