Compression Valve on sink.

Morning everyone. This is my first post so please go easy on me... any advice would be greatly appreciated before I call in the plumber.

We were woken up at 2.00am this morning by the sound of gushing water. Went downstairs to investigate and the water was coming from the connection of the copper pipe to the tap fitting in the small sink in the downstairs loo. After turning off the water, I saw that the actual pipe had come away from the valve so water was going everywhere.

A look on the internet revealed that the connection was a compression thingy... with a little olive. I've tried re-tightening it... but it still leaks like crazy. For some reason the olive won't go over the pipe, which I think it should.

Anyway, my question is do I need to get a replacement valve thing... or am I doing something wrong when trying to retighten it that's causing it not to seal properly?

If the olive won't go over the pipe then the joint will always fail to seal.Olives are available as a separate part so a visit to a plumbers merchant/DIY store should sort you out.As for remaking the joint...nut on pipe 1st then the new olive and wrap one or two turns of ptfe tape round olive and tighten nut to effect a good seal
