Hi there, am going to be fitting French doors into 18" thick limestone walls at the gable end of our house.
Have had the calcs done and got the right lintels. Fine.

Considering the walls are rubble filled and the limestone isn't great anyway, I think he builder who's gonna help me with it (otherway round really!) says he going to cut into the walls with a diamond cutter to not disturb the remaining walls.

My question is this. would it benefit the strength to support the lintels on two colums of concrete blocks on their sides. It would certainly speed things up, but would it be bad as it would be transferring the entire weight straight to the two collumns as they wouldn't really be tied into the surrounding wall.

What do you think?

I've just demolished a 36" thick rubble wall, which was tied into a block wall at one end. The blocks wall and rubble wall (where rubble = slate/lime/soil/dung) were tied together using a small cross section 3 foot long lintel every other block to stitch one wall into the other.
