We've got cast concrete once weathered coping stones to finish off our parapet roof.

I'm asking about correct or good setting out of stones when theres 200mm leftover from full stones. My builder is telling me they work from each side and then put a sliver central.

I know this is a DIY forum and we are doing a lot of our work ourselves. For this job we've got a builder. His subcontracted bricky fitted the stones but worked in from each corned bit this left an unsightly 20cm sliver in the centre which drew your eye and looked ridiculous. When I took him a cuppa I seen it and asked him why he'd done it like that and that we should have had a discussion about that, the answer was '40 years experience and I'm not changing it. I'll do whatever you want on the front but I'm not changing that now'. I said is there no way of changing it so Im stuck with it he said fine, I'll take them off. Then proceeded to rip them off, got his stuff and left.

The choice to do a parapet at all was a big one as we have very little budget. The stones cost us £700. I obviously would never say thats wrong but I've not seen this done like this whilst researching the look I want. Although it might not be technically wrong it certainly looked crap.

Moving on The main contractor is blaming me for 'telling someone how to so their job' and in 32 degree heat. He is also insisting that this bricky did the right thing. My view is that its a finishing touch and they could have let us know especially as we were available on site. And we're the customer and Im allowed to ask questions or not be happy with a finishing touch.

I'd appreciate any opinions on this because I feel like we've been really patient and good customers. Their big mistakes, timescales and extra costs absorbed without complaint. I dare to question one thing and they're downing tools. No wonder we do loads of DIY!!!!

A shorter piece is better and more secure in the middle than on the end. You would be calling him back to refix it after a storm. You won't notice it next week. Perhaps the heat is affecting you too.

Without knowing the length of the run and size of the stones your only other choice in that situation (apart from having a 200 slither at one end) would be to cut every coping stone down a bit. Got a photo?

The cut always goes in the middle...
