Hi all,

First post, apologies if it is in the wrong place.

I am working on various projects around my home, one of which is opening up my porch area to make better use of the space as a cloakroom.

In the corner of the porch there is this concrete fillet (see attached photo) which runs about half way up the wall and is coated in a bitumen type coating. There is a redundant original gutter pipe running through the concrete, which appears through the wall at low level outside the porch and goes to an open grate drain. This pipe has been rendered defunct in the past when new guttering has been installed.

The concrete fillet is between the front wall of the house and the side wall of the porch, on the inside. However I know other houses on the street have the fillet with pipe running through in the corner of the 2 outer walls of the porch (i.e. not abutting the front wall of the house).

For reference the house is a 1950s-60s Wimpey no-fines, the porch is original (was originally an open porch) has been closed off now but the section in question is original and unmolested.

My question is, can I simply cut this concrete out, or is there more to consider here? What was the original purpose of this section of poured concrete?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

Lenny

If my memory is correct, Wimpy used their construction technique in private and also LA housing which I believe was somewhat downrated compared to the private sector. Is your house an ex LA property?

Hi Scally,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The house is an ex-council house in Corby, Northants. There are many of these properties around here, I haven't yet managed to find any detailed plans.

I wasn't aware there was different standards of no fines building, that is interesting.
