Hello, complete newb here. I've recently moved into a flat with a cellar and I'm wishing to turn it from the mess that it's in into a usable storage room.

It's currently got a stone floor with a couple of small holes in, pretty even but not completely so. I'm wanting to concrete over it. As I don't have many tools I was going to use pre mix concrete and stir it in a bucket. Can anyone give me some pointers and advise me on which mix I should use, also shall I use gravel underneath??

The room is about the size of a typical living room, doesn't seem to be damp.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Hi there,
I am a newb to concrete floors also but am reckoning IMHO you'll get more out (of those that know) if you put more information in, i.e....

(in no particular order)

When you say stone, do you mean flags or concrete etc?

When you say 'concrete it over' are you meaning fill the holes, or cover the whole floor?

If cover the whole lot, then why?

Have/could you get a damp meter onto the floor?

The holes- do you know why they are there?

Do you think there are any services running under the floor?

What is the age of the property?

Pics, pics and more pics please!

If you offer something nearer the above, I expect someone will come along sooner or later with good advice.

Cheers,
M

Heres some pics.

Will I get away with a small layer of concrete on this stone?

I would again encourage more info....

The answer to your question would depend upon many factors, such as your end goal?

Is this heading towards a place to store stuff or making a home cinema etc?

A place to store stuff mainly. As you can see it's pretty grim down there. I'd like a nice smooth floor so wondering if I'd get away with pouring a small layer of cement over the stones once it's cleaned or will it need sand/gravel first and reinforcing?

Thanks

You appear to have traditional Yorkshire stone flags - and they are in great condition.
They are astonishingly expensive to buy.

Dont cover them with a layer of anything, preserve them.

You could hire a scrubber and clean them up and re-point them, and leave them in place.

Or you could lift them, and use them again on top of a well laid, damp proofed concrete slab.

If you decide what you'd like to do, then come back here for more advice.
