This is going to sound stupid, but here goes.

Our back yard is concrete with odd drainage channels run through. We want to improve the look so want to lay slabs. We have no DPC as house was built 1870....so do we lay slabs over concrete and raise drainage cover or dig up concrete and start from scratch? (have no idea how thick the concrete is) which is best? in addition I am worried about the yard level being currently flush with back door so makes me think we have to dig up concrete to create step.

If we dig up how do we deal with drainage?

ps can't use a gravel alternative as our dog uses yard for toilet, would make cleaning up way too difficult :O)

Any advice?

thanks.

if its already flush with the door then the only option is to break it out. If there is a manhole cover then that will need to be lowered to the new level.
