Having removed the bathroom switch cover to change it, I looked to see how the wires were arranged prior to removing however,I am certain that the red wire should go to COM and the black to L1, but on inspection my current (no pun intended) wiring the black goes to COM and the red to an unidentified terminal and the earth to earth. Can anyone explain why and if it's wrong whyvit's been working for at least 16 years?

It may be the black is the live feed to the switch and the red the switch return (this is how all the switches are wired at my parents house). It is more common to find it the other way round but it is not really a problem.

If you're not sure then have a look in the ceiling abtten/fitting and see if there is a black wire joined to the 'live loop'

Don't forget to sleeve the black with red sleeving.

EDIT: too slow again ;)
