Did your old switch have four terminals? If so it sounds like a double pole.
If so link the two blacks with a bit of chocblock in the switch back box and connect the reds to comL and L1. This is assuming that you do not have two way switching.

Should work.
One red in COM
One red in L1
Both blacks together in a separate 5 amp connector block
Earths to earth terminal

L2 empty

?

Unsleeved live? Do you have access to a multi meter? check that one of the blacks is live.

Are you certain both blacks were together in L4?

Is there just a light in the room?
Could the switch have controlled something else as well?

Was the old switch a Crabtree one?
It may have something printed on it like IN or FEED
and OUT or LOAD.
If so, tell us what numbers corresponded to which words.

Or just find a similar switch.

yeh thats how i did it, to dark to try now, willtry again once i get home from work, can you stillgetthe 4 terminal switches?

my mistake
it is a crabtreeone and it controls just the light

wire one= 1x red to L1 1x black to L4 and 1x earth

wire two= 1x red to L2 1X black to L3 and 1 x earth

between L4 and L1 are the words out dp
between L3 and L2 bare the words in dp
