Connecting TRV to radiator

Most of my old radiators have inner plastic tubes (c. 10-15 cm length) inside them connecting them to the TRV; how essential is it to re-insert these when re-connecting a radiator (having been power-hosed once removed to remove gunge build-up) and can they be replaced ? if so, what are they called and where can replacements be bought ?
