Converted garage facade height reduction

Hi. I recently bought a house with a poorly converted garage on which the roof leaks just behind the front aspect/facade and consequently has very mouldy plasterboard inside above and on both sides of the doors but not throughout the garage. I think there is blown insulation throughout.

I'd like to remedy the leak and am thinking at the same time I could improve the appearance (it still won't be a looker) by taking off the top course or two of bricks on the facade to bring it level with the rest of the garage roof.

I'd like to keep the costs down so prefer not to buy an angle grinder, hammer drill etc. Should I just go to work on it with a bolster chisel and hammer (and respirator as it looks like the paint is quite lead-rich) to try to take them off or is that likely to cause more damage to the lower courses and render (which probably needs replacing anyway)?

I will look at replacing the entire roof longer term, but for now I just want to make it watertight (I'll put some flashing/felt over the front once the facade is brought level), lose the ugly protrusion and see if I can replace the mouldy plasterboard around the door without the blown insulation causing a complete mess.

Any better approaches/suggestions very welcome. Thanks in advance.
