Converting an avi file for itunes

I am trying to find a decent free download of software that will convert an avi file so that I can import into iTunes to watch on an iPad.

Any suggestions?

Is it avi to Mp4 you're looking for? I think Itunes plays MP4? Obviously it plays .mov files also.

Total video converter is a great program also. Google it and try to find a free version of it. If none of these things work for you, PM me and I'll try to dig out my copy of Total Video Converter and email it to you.

Have you tried VLC app this usually plays most formats on the pc and is free, I have been told it works on iPad although I have not tried myself yet.

if VLC works then use it. I use VLC on all my PCs. If I knew before that it woked on MACs I'd have been using it there too. Without a doubt the best media player out there. It plays, seemingly, everything. And it's free!

Have a look at Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). Its what I use on my ipod touch and it works very well.
