Cooker hood - hole in ceiling but no duct

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice about a cooker hood as I moved into a new build (we needed a home desperately...) and the cooker hood wouldn't work. Got an electrician to have a look and the hood was broken so couldn't be fixed, but it's set up for recirculating mode yet there is a hole in the ceiling and no duct (no charcoal filters either but that's a whole other story).

The builder has eventually said they'll replace it but we've raised our concerns about the hole as surely hot air will still get into the space above the ceiling and it has no way to escape. I'm not convinced that the recirculating mode on the cooker hood will stop this from happening.

The electrician reported his concerns as well in his report, but no one is listening, so I'm beginning to think am I worrying about nothing. Any thoughts appreciated - and advice about the best way to fill the hole would also be great

No, you are not worrying about nothing.

There should not be a hole in the ceiling - end of.

The hood must have a filter.

Kick up a fuss.

Can you get some plaster board or plywood and cut a hole in it the size of the hole that's there? Place a piece of wooden batten across the inside with a few inches either side of the hole bridging it and fix this with a screw each side and then screw the circular piece of plaster board/plywood into the fixed batten.

Though someone has drilled the hole for duct work than sounds like was overlooked?

Thanks for replying, much appreciated We like a battle in this house I am thinking about posting on the site forum as I'm not convinced that other houses with the same cooker hood aren't in the same situation.

Yes speak to your neighbours and see if they actually have a vented extractor, you'd expect that in new builds these days! You might be able to see if other houses have vents.

If it’s a new house the builder needs to remedy ALL the defects and the building regs say cooker hoods need to extract to the outside too

I thought I read that it was now a requirement, for the cooker hood to extract outdoors - recirculate is no longer acceptable in a new build.

Thanks all, I should have mentioned that we do have a vented wall extractor fan in the kitchen, which meets the regs, so I assume they decided to do this rather than put a duct from the cooker hood - but still don't think the hole should be there.
