In the process of having extension built for kitchen diner and have a query about the electrics. Does the cooker hood need to be wired into a flex outlet which is then connected to an accessible fused connection unit at worktop level in order to comply with regulations? Or is this just preferable?

At the moment the builders have wired it so there is just a switched socket for the hood at hood level and I'm not sure whether this would pass for building regulations. If it needs changing I want to get it done now rather than wait till walls plastered etc.

There is only one person who can tell you what a building inspector will pass sure you can guess yes it's the building inspector.

However give good reason why something is done and normally he will pass it. For example I mounted some sockets low and once I explained it was so the bed would go over the sockets and not damage them he accepted even though it did not comply with standard heights.

A socket for extractor makes good sense it is easy to remove for maintenance.

do the manufacturer of the hood recommend?

There is no reason it wouldn't providing your builder in installing this socket ha complied to the building regulations

By the evidence you have produced, I doubt that the location of the socket would contravene building regulations. Did you not have any input into the location of accessories, I would if practically possible always suggest that an isolator was fitted in a location that would allow easy isolation.

Thanks for the replies.

Hood manufacturer manual indicates it can just be plugged in and doesn't mention anything about an isolator elsewhere.

I believe they are complying with building regs, the inspector has been round pretty frequently, just getting myself concerned as I really don't know much about it!

We did have input into where to locate the accesories but for some reason they ignored or forgot this! I too would prefer to have an isolator somewhere within easier reach but wasn't sure if this is a must have or just a personal choice. Will probably ask them to put the isolator in before they get much further.

If you asked for an easily accessible form of isolation, I think now would be a good time to jog the builders memory!

I would only be concerned if in unplugging the unit, it would require to reach over any area where extreme heat is a potential danger, such as the hob!

That is why I like to wire cooker hoods from the cooker circuit so that it will be isolated by the cooker control switch.
