cookers

We do have a friend who is corgi registered but NOT gas safe registered who doesn't want to help.

You can not be Corgi registered without being Gas Safe Registered.

With rfegard to the FFD, that is always on an oven, and has been for decades. In a flat you now have to have a flame supervision device on ALL burners.

Cookers spec states it is/has FSD. Is that what you mean by FFD's?

expertgasman has answered for me - cheers chap. :)

Bit suprised no-one mentioned it in the discussion earlier - the regulation has been in force a considerable amount of time now.

That is one reason why us gas folk don't reccomend it as a DIY job. The OP has no idea of the regs (it's not a crititism) and could potentially fit an illegal appliance into their property.

Mr. W.

So is FSD the same thing as FFD? And what does OP mean? Am a complete novice to this so don't always understand what some accronnyms stand for :? Must say this forum is great for learning new stuff!
Can you tell me if new cooker will come with chain? as our old one is so old it has never had one!

So is FSD the same thing as FFD?

not precisely. A Flame Supervision Device will reignite flame if flame goes out. A Flame Failure Devive will restrict the gas flow until a positive source of ignition has been established. It's simple, but takes a bit of understanding. But if you are confused, don't worry, 'cos you will have Joe 9o to keep you company (but don't listen to anything he warbles about)

And what does OP mean?

No, it won't. But you normally use a bracket now, and SOME cookers are supplied with this. To be honest, although I am trained in cookers, years ago, I chose not to renew my ticket for cookers some years ago, so I am not 100% current. The differenece is, (between me and some others), I am aware of it.

Seriously, there are issues regading cookers, and |I strongly advise you to consulty the Gasafe Find an engineer site. I would say a fair price is £75 - £100, if it's done properly.

Ps any negative comment are not directed at you.

Fsd is not designed to reignite the flame its prime purpose is in the event of burner outage is to reduce the gas rate so low it doesnt present a danger, granted most modern cookers have spark generators that will attempt to relight the burner when it goes out. There are thousands of cookers that have manual ignition and will not relight if the oven goes out. FFD are flame failure devices designed to shut the gas off if no heat is present. Expert gas man I hope this helps
I know you know all this but

Thanks to both expertgasman and gasbanni (also Mr.W). Love learning new stuff, its just nice to have that assurance about something i know nothing about. Makes the whole experience slightly less scary :)
You aren't told any of this stuff when buying a cooker in the first place!
Just out of interest does anyone know who Argos use for installation?

If the cooker you have bought does not have ffds on the hob burners & you live in a flat it cannot be legaly installed!

Cooker has arrived and as of yet to be installed, does have ffd's so that's good news. Thanks for everybody's help :D

are you near chelsea or kensington as i work that area (gas), do you have a fitter

Olympia, West Kensington. Have requested quotes from six contacts off gas safe register website. No replies as yet. Cooker would require a new hose, and because the old cooker was unable to be taken away (because it wasn't disconnected in time for delivery of new one) need that sorting out too!

Hi, quotes are coming through, varied to say the least. Currently ranging from £95-£170!! Advice needed on how long this job should roughly take as one quote stated Two hours (£130 for labour). Would it really take that long? Or am I being taken advantage of?
Cooker has chains on back, new hose is needed. old cooker needs disconnecting.

depends on local conditions I.E stairs etc, about an hour i would say for the job not 2 but to get rid of old cooker in your area aswell around £100-£120 seems about right, i know that seems axpensive but it's probably about £40 to remove and dispose of old cooker

Have found a fitter who's coming this morning, agreed terms and price. All in £100. Happy with that, fingers crossed it goes well! :D
