Hi i was just wondering what is the correct mix for mortar, for a extension wall and if i need to add any additives that actually work to prolong its life.Read somewhere 5 parts sand and 1 part cement i dont know if that is right
Thanks

4-1 building sand - cement. Additives are generally to do with workability and or setting of the mortar and are largely irrelevant in terms of long term performance.

You will not be able to lay it without using plasticiser though. buy a gallon and read the doasge guide.

4 or 5:1 is a fairly typical mix and is suitable for most bricks.

Generally speaking the harder or denser the brick/block the stronger the mix.

Internal aerated blocks for instance recommends 5 or 6:1.
