Hi everyone, I am thinking of getting a builder in to widen the chimney opening up to the dotted line in the pic to fit in a cast iron fireplace for decorative purposes. Received a quote of £750 for the job, which includes fitting in a new lintel. Doesn't include fitting fireplace.

As you can see in this pic there is a steel rod at the bottom-am I correct in saying that its there to support the chimney?

Does anyone know if this is a reasonable quote? Thanks

Think your getting shafted pal, shouldn't take longer than a shift even with materials price seems a bit on the high side :)

the new opening will be approx 33" high with the lintel above, by 27" wide - do these dimensions come from the proposed new CI fireplace?

Yes! That's the exact dimensions actually.

have the CI fireplace to hand as work starts - you can then dry fit it as work goes along.
