i dont charge by the m2 unless im onsite and the going rate for site work is between £3-£4,
i charge by the day, £200 would be ample for me after the tax im left with £160 for a days graft which im more than happy with
tbh spreads down this way are 2 a penny and you can get it done cheaper
and yes it would be a 2 coat application i never 1 coat that would be cheating
Fair enough then, must be a lot of competition for work.
You are well cheap.
I can get anything between £10-15 a metre. It normally works out better for me, as the customers I deal with don't seem to like to pay day rate.
Most think i'm going to slow it down!
i would love to earn between £10-£15 a metre but its just not possible down here if i tried to charge that i would not get any work at all, i remember quoting an old lady £380 for 3-4 days work i came in cheap because i wanted the work it could easily have been a quote for £700 or so, some young nipper came and done it all for £200 and there was a hell of a lot work there for that kind of money, thats what im competing with every other bloke here is a spread to give you an example i live in a road 6 houses long there is a spread opposite me and another 2 spreads that live in the flats at either end of the road and there are builders behind me that can spread, i can throw a stone on 4 other spreads from my doorstep, we have a college that chucks out a couple of hundred a year "spreads or wanna be spreads" that are only to willing to come in with a cheap price so they can get some experience ,
it may be all irrelevant to me now as the last job i had gave me tennis elbow and im not sure how long its going to last ive been reading that it could take a year to heal :(

I hope the elbow problem sorts itself out for ya Steve. ;)
cheers rc

Steve - have a look at spraying render, no strain on the elbow compared to hawk and trowel or skimming . Three man gang ideal - lad putting the bags in, a lad spraying and you ruling off/spatching. You H frame and the lads can help on the scratch pads as long as you keep an eye on them til they are good at it.

When I was on the monocouche spraying full time, the two lads used to rub it up with the pads and brush down while I was beading up the next day's hit.

Worth a look into to get the work going.

Also everyone who needs it GET INCOME PROTECTION . I'd have lost my house without it after an accident. PM me if you want advice on this - not financial advice, but from my experience.

Apologies to OP for hijack, will delete and repost if you want.
mich ive had a go at spraying render and ruling with the h frame hard graft it was scratchcoated a whole new build 2 story cottage in one day, if i remember rightly his machine was a g4 very expensive set up as well, i dident enjoy it either, although there is some serious money to be made machine plastering i dont think its for me , i have a mate who tape and joints and hes showing me the ropes with that (still site work ) illl wait and see how that pans out, also thaks for the offer of some advice i will keep that in mind:cool:

stevethespreader, sorry to hear about the tennis elbow. I have had it and it can stick around for sometime, even had injections that sorted it out for awhile but it returned then went away again, hopefully for good.
Sounds like there is a lot of competition in your area for spreads, nowhere near as many where I live, but I am quite fortunate as plastering is not my main trade, even though I learn't it as a wee boy, that and dry lining/tape jointing it was my dad that got me in to it.
I mainly do electrical installs but get a lot of plastering off the back of it and the prices are quite good. It's a dog eat dog world sometimes and you make the best of what you can and if that means dipping the prices a little, so be it.
But good luck with the elbow.
cheers recent studies has showed that if you have the injection it is more likely to recur, not sure why, im going to let it heal naturally, how long did you have it for? your well lucky its gone ive heard of other spreads having to retire from it

my elbow was murder till steve introduced me to the plastic trowel now i can spread everyday with very very minimal pain and get a pukka finish, so thank you very much for that little tip mate, hope the elbow gets better for ya fella, hows the tape and jointing goin, or as i call it mass filler haha.
to the OP i was thinking a room that size is usually about 300 round this way then you can either do it in a day and earn a bit moe for working a bit harder or you can do it over a day and a half which is still good money but obviously not as much for that bit of an extra push to do it in one day, the 350 i said was just incase ya fancied being greedy haha or if some one was a bit slow and wanted to do it over 2 entire days.
but i reckon 300 a room over a day each room is a nice price id do it for that anyway

looks like ill have to start using my plastic trowel more have you got tennis elbow? i thought you had a bad shoulder?

Why would a plastic trowel help?
it cuts down the amount of troweling up, but jr seems to have mastered it better than me i just used to use it to save time in giving the plaster another wet trowel, but jr uses it differently its best if he explains

Still don't see it. You slap it on spread it out, come back and smooth it off. How would plastic help?

the pressure you have to appy to the trowel for a 2 trowel finish is far greater than the pressure with a plastic trowel i only have to give it one wet trowel when its still quite soft then a final dry one with the plastic and it finishes better than a ss trowel in my opinion, plus as i said i couldnt work anymore with my ss trowel but i switched to the plastic and have been fine everyday.
steve its my sholder and elbow that have gone, but ive been absolutaly fine scince you said bout the plastic

Steve try and find someone who does Reflexology and have a session with them for treatment to your arm. I had tennis elbow about ten years ago and one of my mates girlfriend did reflexology on me and cured it, I haven't had a problem since, It's worth a go mucka...

I had it on and off for a while.
It kept coming and going.
Had it about three months before injection, after that a little sore for a few days, then no problems for about six months.
It then came back and I let nature takes it's course, some good days some bad. Then it just seemed, like one day it had gone, don't know if I just got that used to it but never notice it go.
But I think it was there for a good few weeks, maybe 12-16.
My problem is I do a lot of fitness training and sports, at the gym three or four times a week and do the squash and badminton, so the elbow gets a lot of stick outside work too. Not sure if my leisure time is the cause or maybe even the cure.
But it went away and not had any pains for a couple of years now.
